We have a pair of Aboriginal clapsticks (also known as bilma or music sticks), which are traditional percussion instruments used by Indigenous Australians. Key Characteristics & Uses • Purpose: They are clapped together to maintain rhythm during song cycles, voice chants, and social or ceremonial corroborees. They are frequently used alongside the didgeridoo in Northern Australia. • ]Design: These specific sticks feature hand-painted Indigenous dot art. The motif portrays stylized animal figures and a circularr meeting place emblem across a blue gradient background. • Material: Traditionally carved from dense native hardwoods like mulga, ironbark, or spotted gum to produce a bright, sharp resonant sound when struck.
