This is an antique or vintage Sinhalese (Sri Lankan) porcupine-quill and ebony lidded trinket bowl raised on a carved elephant pedestal stand, dating to around 1900.
Materials: Constructed from solid dark wood (often ebony or calamander) with natural porcupine quills inlaid in alternating geometric panels around the bowl and lid, accented with bone or ivory dots and stringing.
Design: A lidded circular container featuring a tiered, domed top, resting on a base supported by hand-carved miniature elephants standing on a shaped plinth.
Original/Context: These pieces are classic examples of Anglo-Indian/British Colonial decorative crafts made in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, frequently produced as tourist or export curiosities. Most tusks are missing.
